Cougar Academy of Media Arts and Technology

An official Signature School in the Washoe County School District, the Cougar Academy of Media Arts and Technology provides its students with an education with emphasis in four main categories: Video Production, Web-Design, Graphic Design/Photography, and Publications. The Cougar Academy of Media Arts and Communication will help meet the need to bridge the ever-growing “digital divide.” All four strands will help students develop the problem-solving skills needed to be successful in post-secondary education and successful careers. Through curriculum and hands-on work experience, student will gain an understanding of the real connections between their education and the workplace.   

All students will continue with their main core curriculum requirements, but enrollees will focus their electives on Media Arts and Communication, with an emphasis on one of four specific pathways: Web Design, Photography/Graphic Design, Publications, and TV/Film Production. Regardless of the chosen pathway, all students will take a round-robin elective during their freshmen year which will introduce them to all four options.

    • -Selection Process - Applications will be reviewed by a committee at each Signature Academy.  Placement will be determined by lottery if the number of qualified candidates exceeds the number of available spots.  Up to 25% of spots at each Signature Academy will be reserved for non-zoned students.  Admissions decisions are expected to be released by March 1, 2012.

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

1. Seniors: Jostens will be here to distribute Caps & Gowns this Thursday, May 17th from 10:25-1:30 in the gym lobby. (Lewis 5/7-5/17)

2. Athletic Clearances for next year are taking place throughout May (this will be for high school students only). Please get clearance packet information on-line on the WCSD web site or the Spanish Springs home page web site. Athletes will be able to drop off completed packets in the front office to Mrs. Ramilo before May 31st. This will be the last day that athletic packets will be accepted until registration day. (Ramilo 5/7-5/31)

3. Attention Seniors: Please mark your calendars now. Practice for this year's graduation ceremony will be held on Wednesday, June 6th from 11:00- 1:00 at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. All seniors will take their 5th and 6th period finals on Friday, June 1st; 0, 1st and 2nd periods finals on Monday, June 4th; and 0, 3rd and 4th period finals on Tuesday, June 5th. Seniors will not have school on Wednesday, June 6th due to graduation practice. Our graduation ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 9th from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. All seniors must arrive to the Convention Center by 8:00 a.m. the morning of the ceremony. Parent letters will be mailed home with all the details for graduation on or around May 18th. Mrs. Fuson and Mr. Salter will be visiting senior ACA classes during the last two weeks of May to present grad information to all seniors. (Fuson 5/14-5/19)

4. Drivers Ed Classes will be offered at Spanish Springs this summer. June 11-14 is the first class but there will be other classes in July and August as well. Please call for dates and times. This 30 hour class fulfills the classroom requirement for a driver's license in Nevada if you are under 18. The cost is $90. Call 829-9010. (Office 5/14-5/19)

5. If you love ice cream, come on down to Yogurt Beach tomorrow, Wednesday, May 16th. Bring your friends and family and enjoy over 10 flavors and tons of toppings. Part of your purchase will benefit the Class of 2012 so come on down and enjoy some ice cream with your friends and family! (Tousignant 5/8-5/16)

6. There will be a Junior Class officer meeting this Thursday, May 17th after school in room 251. (Burra 5/8-5/16)

7. Have you ever wondered what it would be like in the Cougar mascot uniform? Now is your chance! We will be having the Cougar mascot tryouts May 24th in the small gym from 3:30-5:30. Stop by the clinics going on right now - Wed. and Thurs. from 4-6 in the small gym to speak with our cheer coaching staff if you have any questions. We hope to see you all there. 8. Cheerleading and Stunt Team tryouts are right around the corner so don't delay in getting your athletic packet and clearance forms turned in today. Cheerleading and Stunt team tryouts for Football season will be on May 21-May 23 from 4-6 pm in the small gym. If you want to try out for our competitive co-ed team, tryouts are May 24 - May 25 from 4-6 in the small gym. If you are wondering if you can do both the answer is YES. 9. Attention all Track athletes, the final middle school meet is today, Tuesday, May 15th after school. You are required to help. Stop by and talk with Coach Canfield if there is any problem. (Canfield 5/10-5/15)

11. Join the Athletic Department for a SSHS Senior Student-Athlete Signing Ceremony tomorrow, Wednesday, May 16th at 11:55 in the SSHS Main Gym Lobby. The following athletes will be honored:

14. Seniors - Remember to purchase your Safe & Sober Grad night tickets on Wednesday's at lunch. Cost is $40 in advance and goes up to $50 at the door. (Ritch 5/14-5/16)

15. Lifetouch will be on campus this Thursday, May 17th and Friday, May 18th to take pictures for next year's ID cards. Teachers have been given the rotation time for their students to come down to the Common area during class time. Students that do not have a class on the rotation can go to the common area during nutrition break to have their picture taken. (Sterett 5/15-5/18)

16. Seniors: Return ALL overdue library books and pay any outstanding fines by this Thursday, May 17th. Josten's will NOT issue caps and gowns until books are returned and fines are paid. (Fitzgerald 5/15-5/17)

17. SkillsUSA meetings will now be held I the planning room right next to the Auto shop in the Industrial Arts hall, Tuesday's at lunch. Our first meeting there is today, May 15th at lunch. We have things to give out to the wonderful competitors who went to the State competition in April. See you there. (Peters 5/15)

20. It's back! Yearbook Signing Party Tickets will be on sale at lunch today through May 24th. Cost is $2 if you bought a yearbook, or $5 if you haven't. Make sure you buy your tickets soon...and remember you don't get your book until May 30th if you don't go to the signing party. (Marvin 5/1505/24)

For Senior class office we only have one candidate and that is Danielle Strozza for President. Juniors, if you want to run for senior class office you need to get an application from Ms. Miller in 213 ASAP. They will be due to the office by the 21st, which is next Monday; this is for senior class office only. Elections will be held next Thursday the 24th. (Kylie Miller 5/15-5/21)

Congratulations to the swimmers for another great season! The boys finished 5th at Regionals and the Girls 9th overall. There were many great performances. Just a few were the two new school records by McKenzie Clemens in the 100 Breaststroke and the 200 Free relay of Jared Means, Eric Benton, Tylor Martinez and Rusty Taft. Also Jared placed 4th in the 200 IM, Melina Blondfield 5th in the 100 Free, Reed Parkhurst 6th in the 200 IM and Audrey Blondfield 7th in the 50 Free. And let's wish Walter Lee good luck as his 2nd place moves him on to State in Las Vegas this weekend. (Branson 5/15)
